Just recently, a friend asked me, "what's the point of the whole church thing? Why do you think you are supposed to go be together?" Several thoughts flashed through my mind, all at the same time, including:
1. AAHHH! This is my chance to say something wise and convince a skeptic of God!
2. Shoot! I don't have anything wise to say!! What is my answer??
3. Because the bible says so...nah, that won't convince this person! (Although it does say "do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing", Hebrews 10:25)
4. uh, oh, now they are wondering why I'm pausing so long....
5. Finally I landed on this analogy, "you know when you are tennis player, and you know how to play the game, but you enjoy it more and learn more and are much better with some coaching? That's one reason for coming together."
So, in hindsight, that analogy has all kinds of problems with it, but the general idea is there: we shouldn't give up meeting together. There is inherent value in the coaching and encouragement that comes from being together. It will help us "run the race set out for us" when we come together in community.
This fall, I am excited about the many places women are invited to come together. Click here to see the Fall 2009 brochure and read for yourself, but here's just a sampling:
Thrive is a ministry that encourages women to "live beyond the surface." Thrive gathers weekly for fun, encouragement, and teaching. It's a great place to plug in for the first time at Hope! This Fall's series is "Woman: Ancient Meets Modern," studying some surprising truths about the parallels between women in scripture and women today.
Precept is an inductive bible study studying Isaiah. If you want to know more about studying the bible, come experience this class!
For men and women, Apprentice is a new class on Sunday nights that includes experiential methods for seeking God in modern life.
And for moms, check out our playgroups, mom's night out, and MOPs choices!
Finally, mark your calendar now for March 19-21, 2010. Alicia Britt Chole will be our speaker for the 2010 Women's Weekend in a new and fabulous location! More information coming soon, but you won't want to miss it!
You are always welcome at any choice. Look for a women's ministry table in the next couple of weeks with brochures to take and women available to answer any questions.
Many women have been working diligently this summer to pull together a great fall of connection together and growth in God's word. We look forward to our "new year" together!
